HMM proceeds with onboard carbon capture and storage initiatives

In pursuit of its 2050 carbon neutrality goal, HMM is actively advancing multiple initiatives, including the installation and demonstration of an Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage System (OCCS) on the 2,200 TEU container ship HMM Mongla—the first such deployment in South Korea.

This technology aims to capture and liquefy carbon dioxide emitted during ship operations, preventing its release into the atmosphere and potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

According to a statement, HMM plans to validate the effectiveness of OCCS in reducing emissions during the demonstration phase.

Additionally, the South Korean ocean carrier has been collaborating since April of last year with Samsung Heavy Industries, Korean Register, and Panasia, a domestic environmental equipment specialist, in research aimed at developing OCCS technology.

This effort aligns with international recognition of OCCS as a viable carbon reduction technology by bodies such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Further bolstering its environmental efforts, HMM has also initiated measures such as ordering methanol-powered container ships, incorporating bio-fuels into its fleet, and enhancing hull efficiency and navigation systems.
