HMM launches supply chain carbon calculator for GHG emission monitoring

HMM has introduced the Supply Chain Carbon Calculator, a cutting-edge digital platform empowering customers to gain comprehensive visibility into their carbon footprint throughout the entire logistics process.

This innovative tool offers analytical insights into total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the Place of Receipt to the Place of Delivery, inclusive of door locations. Through the calculator, customers can effectively manage emissions across all container flows, making informed decisions to opt for the most environmentally friendly mode of transport.

Furthermore, HMM’s Supply Chain Carbon Calculator adheres to industry-accredited methodologies for both inland and ocean transportation. For the ocean leg, emissions are calculated using the Clean Cargo methodology, providing industry-average emission factors for maritime container transport per trade lane. Inland transport emissions follow the Global Logistics Emission Council (GLEC) framework, a globally recognized methodology for reporting logistics GHG footprints.

The calculator allows users to express emissions by choosing between Well-to-Wake (WTW) and Tank-to-Wake (TTW). Estimated emissions can be noted on the bill of lading, and certificates can be issued based on actual transport data.

In addition, HMM envisions this digital tool complementing its Green Sailing Service, contributing to the reduction of customers’ Scope 3 GHG emissions by utilizing low-carbon fuels.

“There has been a growing interest in sustainability and green transportation solutions, accelerating the need for reducing emissions. We will continue to seek a better way to ensure full visibility of tracking carbon footprint, thereby making significant headway in reaching carbon neutrality,” stated an HMM official.
