HMM, best-performing carrier for carbon emission in Far East – US West Coast lane

HMM was the best-performing carrier in terms of carbon emissions between Far East Asia and the United States West Coast in the fourth quαrter of 2022, according to the Carbon Emissions Index (CEI).

CEI is published quarterly by Xeneta, an ocean freight rate analysis firm, in partnership with Marine Benchmark, a data management specialist for the maritime industry, and demonstrates the carbon intensity of shipping companies across 13 main global trade lanes based on the actual cargo load and sailing data.

According to CEI, HMM recorded 70.2 points in the period October – December 2022, scoring 27% better than the trade lane average of 96.2 points.

“Environmental capabilities are key to success for a sustainable future amid the ever-changing market situation,” said an HMM official.

HMM unveiled its mid-to-long-term strategy in July last year, while it has ordered nine methanol-powered container vessels last month. The major South Korean container carrier has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with various fuel suppliers to secure the supply of methanol fuel.

Furthermore, HMM opened a land-based Fleet Control Centre in 2020, which monitors harmful greenhouse gas emissions by controlling fleet operations and processing sailing data in real time.

“We will be dedicated to better preparing for stricter environmental regulations by reducing carbon emissions,” pointed out a company’s representative.
