Hitachi Rail has agreed to acquire U.S.-based Clever Devices, marking a major step in its strategy to expand as a global digital mobility player.

The deal will strengthen Hitachi Rail’s presence in North America and extend its capabilities beyond rail into broader public transport systems.

Expanding digital mobility capabilities

Headquartered in Woodbury, Clever Devices provides advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) used by transit agencies worldwide. The company expects revenues of over $220 million in 2026 and serves 8 of the 10 largest transit agencies in North America.

Its solutions enhance fleet management, passenger information, and operational efficiency across buses and rail systems.

Integration with HMAX platform

Clever Devices’ technology will complement Hitachi Rail’s HMAX Mobility platform, which uses data, AI, and digital twins to optimize transport infrastructure and performance.

The combination will enable real-time, multimodal transport solutions and support more efficient, connected urban mobility systems.

Giuseppe Marino said the acquisition will accelerate digital transformation in public transport and expand the company’s global capabilities.

Supporting sustainable transport

The deal will help improve energy efficiency, optimize operations, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across transport networks.

The transaction is expected to close later in 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
