HHLA enhances box terminal equipment with three STS cranes from Liebherr

Port equipment manufacturer Liebherr Container Cranes will supply three big dual trolley ship-to-shore container cranes (STS) to German operator Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) for use at its Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in Hamburg.

“The upgraded cranes represent an important step forward in Liebherr’s long-standing relationship with HHLA,” said Liebherr in a statement. The newly acquired double trolley cranes are the first step in a new strategic relationship, marking the beginning of a tighter collaboration between the two firms, following the successful delivery of two STS cranes in 2015 and three in 2017.

Dual trolley ship-to-shore container cranes (STS)

The cranes have a safe operating load of 75 tonnes dual lift at 61 meters outreach, 53 meters lift height, 24.5 meters back reach, and 35 meters span.

The cabinless cranes will be totally automated and controlled remotely. Liebherr said dual-trolley STS cranes provide operational flexibility and increased efficiency by operating two trolleys on a single crane, while energy regeneration and capture is a significant element of the cranes, and it is performed at both the primary and portal trolley hoist drives, reducing the crane’s power usage.

The application of advanced automation algorithms decreases energy consumption per container moved even more, contributing to a more ecologically friendly and sustainable operation, according to Liebherr.
