Heysham Port has completed the first phase of a £10 million upgrade, coinciding with the launch of Stena Line’s first hybrid freight ferry, the Stena Futura.
The 147-metre vessel began service last week, operating 12 sailings per week between the UK and Northern Ireland. A sister ship, Stena Connecta, is expected in early 2026. Together, they will boost Stena Line’s freight capacity by 40%.
Peel Ports Group has introduced a new terminal operating system under the upgrade, improving vessel turnaround times and preparing the port for larger, high-capacity vessels. Civil works are also progressing, including 70 new trailer parking spaces and a planned automated entrance, set to open in early 2026.
Phil Hall, Mersey Port Director at Peel Ports, said the improvements “streamline operations while supporting Stena Line’s growth plans” and will “futureproof the port and create regional growth opportunities.”
Paul Grant, Route Director at Stena Line, added: “Stena Futura’s arrival and the launch of its sister ship respond to customer demand and will significantly increase freight capacity on the Belfast–Heysham route.”
