Hapag-Lloyd to test Inmarsat Maritime’s NexusWave service

Inmarsat Maritime has announced that global container shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd is among the first to test NexusWave, a service that integrates multiple satellite networks into a unified connectivity solution.

This trial is expected to support Hapag-Lloyd’s need for a robust connectivity solution that addresses growing communication and security needs, as well as the increasing expectations for both business and crew communications.

NexusWave offers an “office-like” and “home-like” experience, ensuring continuous connectivity without concerns about usage limits, quotas, or speeds. It customizes services for each vessel’s requirements, providing a transparent total cost of ownership — all within a seamless, integrated solution. Additionally, NexusWave includes an upgrade path to the ViaSat-3 network.

“With NexusWave, our vessels can transform into floating offices, seamlessly integrated with onshore and cloud-based IT systems. This advancement in connectivity will allow us to further streamline operations through cloud-based solutions, achieving significant cost savings and enhancing crew IT services to match onshore experiences,” commented Patrick Briest, Senior Director of IT – Network & Operations, Hapag-Lloyd.

The tests will evaluate how high-speed, reliable internet connections can enable critical enterprise functions to transition to the cloud, facilitating better alignment with office-based teams and allowing crew access to IT services that were previously available only onshore.

Tailored to meet specific customer needs, NexusWave uses SD-WAN technology for intelligent traffic management and prioritization, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for mission-critical operations while supporting video-based services like remote inspections. Additionally, it separates business and crew welfare channels to enhance connectivity for both.

Moreover, NexusWave encrypts traffic at the vessel level and employs advanced enterprise-grade infrastructure trusted by leading enterprises and governments globally to increase the security levels.

“With NexusWave enhanced connectivity, we can provide our customers with a seamless, secure, and robust communication environment that transforms maritime operations. We are committed to continuing to provide solutions that not only meet but exceed the expectations and needs of our valued customers like Hapag-Lloyd: ensuring their operations are efficient and future-ready,” stated Gert-Jan Panken, VP of Sales, Inmarsat Maritime.
