Halterm terminal planned to be expaned

The controversial plan by the Halifax Port Authority to temporarily extend the berth at the Halterm container terminal, is reported to be moving ahead as planned.

In a news release Wednesday (Oct. 24), the port authority announced that it’s board of directors and CEO had confirmed that work on the temporary south end container terminal berth should begin and has started to be implement its August 2018 board decision.

That’s despite the port authority’s plan being panned by federal officials, which reportedly means that Ottawa would not provide funding the help finance the expansion plan.

Lane Farguson, who speaks on behalf of the port authority, said in an interview that the authority’s announcement Wednesday was primarily to inform international customers of the port that work was going ahead and that plans to extend the terminal, to better accommodate the gigantic new class of container vessels, would be completed by the time the larger ships start calling on Halifax.
