Greece’s maritime sector is charting a bold new course as several of the country’s leading shipping firms re-enter the container feeder market, marking a shift with significant geopolitical and operational implications.

Chartworld Shipping is the latest Greek firm to make headlines.

The company has reportedly signed a letter of intent with Chinese shipbuilder New Dayang for two firm and two optional 3,100 TEU container ships, with delivery scheduled for 2028.

The move follows a wave of similar investments by fellow Greek owners.

Latsco Shipping has ordered 1,900 TEU vessels from Guangzhou’s Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, while Alberta Shipmanagement and Chios Navigation are pursuing comparable feeder-size newbuilds.

Also, Heidmar has made a strategic move into the container shipping sector by acquiring a 1,702 TEU gearless feeder vessel marking its first investment in the feeder segment, which it views as a critical and underserved component of the global container trade.

Meanwhile, Contships has expanded its own footprint in the segment with the purchase of two 1,992 TEU vessels, the largest the company has ever acquired. This latest move grows Contships’ fleet to 45 ships, solidifying its position as one of the world’s leading independent owners of feeder container vessels.

With global supply chains under pressure from geopolitical tensions including disruptions in the Red Sea, the fallout of the Ukraine conflict, and reduced capacity at the Panama Canal the need for more flexible and regionalized shipping solutions has never been greater.
