Liebherr Container Cranes has completed a structural upgrade to two ship-to-shore gantry cranes at the Port of Grangemouth, Scotland’s largest container terminal.
The phased schedule was designed to limit disruption to ongoing port operations throughout the project.
The two upgraded cranes were originally delivered in 2006 and had been in continuous service for nearly two decades. The raise extends their operational lifespan, offering the port a cost-effective alternative to full crane replacement. A third crane, delivered in 2018, was not part of the upgrade.
Together, the three cranes support an annual throughput exceeding 250,000 TEU.
Craig Torrance, Asset Manager at the Port of Grangemouth, noted that the upgrade was a deliberate step toward securing the terminal’s competitiveness in a market where container volumes and equipment specifications continue to evolve.
He credited the Liebherr team with delivering the project with minimal interference to daily operations, which he described as a critical requirement.
The upgrade reflects a broader industry trend of extending the service life of existing port infrastructure through targeted modifications, rather than full asset replacement, as terminals seek to manage capital expenditure while meeting rising operational demands.
