Gothenburg port authority seeks operator for car terminal

Since 2011, Logent Ports and Terminals has successfully operated the car terminal at the Port of Gothenburg.

However, with the contract set to expire in 2026, the Gothenburg Port Authority has initiated the process of selecting a new terminal operator for Sweden’s largest carport.

Under Logent’s management, the number of vehicles handled at the port has increased by nearly 100,000 units, marking a 60% rise over 15 years. In 2023 alone, vehicle volumes grew by 14%.

While annual volumes have fluctuated slightly, the long-term trend shows a clear upward trajectory. The port’s infrastructure has been developed in multiple stages, both on land and sea, and the proximity to Volvo’s headquarters and significant global production facilities has contributed to this growth.

“But this increase would not have been possible without Logent’s competitive offer, so they play a large part in our ability to title ourselves Sweden’s largest car port today,” stated Magnus Nordfeldt, head of Business Area Cargo at the Gothenburg Port Authority.

With the contract set to expire in two years, it is now time to select an operator for the period beginning in 2026 and beyond.

“We see great interest so far and hope that as many competent operators as possible will jump at the opportunity. There is in fact great market potential. Today, the port has about 36% of the Swedish vehicle market, and we are eager to work together with the future operator to increase that number,” added Magnus Nordfeldt.

As per the competition documents, the final application date is June 10, 2024, for the upcoming concession, which will have a contract period of at least seven years. The duration of the contract will primarily be determined by the operator’s willingness to invest. The Port Authority is willing to offer a longer contract to operators who are prepared to make larger investments. The Port Authority estimates the contract’s value to be approximately US$11 million per year.

In addition to vehicle loading and unloading, the Port Authority requires the terminal operator to provide Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) services for vehicles. Furthermore, the operator should have the capability to handle larger project cargo and some extent of High & Heavy goods.

“Besides that, the future operator will have great opportunities to create and develop their own business with the development of new transport arrangements, product areas, and customer segments, of course with support from the Gothenburg Port Authority,” commented Magnus Nordfeldt.
