GNV has partnered with Lloyd’s Register (LR) to deliver the third edition of its fleet energy-efficiency and decarbonisation training programme. The latest three-day course took place at the MSC Training Centre in Sorrento and brought together about 50 crew members from across the ferry operator’s fleet.
Training Focus
The programme aimed to strengthen skills in energy management, alternative fuels, and the use of digital tools for monitoring consumption and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Developed jointly by GNV’s Energy Efficiency Department and LR specialists, the sessions covered international and EU regulatory frameworks, onboard efficiency technologies, and best operational practices. The course also explored low-emission fuel strategies, including biofuels and LNG.
Training combined theory, workshops, and practical exercises based on data analysis and performance-monitoring systems.
Industry Engagement
The final day featured presentations from industry partners such as Wärtsilä, Hempel, VARD Fincantieri Group, KROHNE, RINA Digital Solutions and TRADER. They addressed emerging technologies, digital solutions, and new energy scenarios relevant to reducing the environmental impact of shipping.
Supporting GNV’s Sustainability Strategy
The initiative forms part of GNV’s broader strategy to cut emissions through technology upgrades, refits, and crew development.
Ivana Melillo, Energy Efficiency Director at GNV, said the programme strengthens professional skills and helps crews meet regulatory and operational challenges with greater awareness.
Lloyd’s Register also highlighted the importance of tailored support in energy management and alternative fuels. Gianpaolo Dalla Vedova said the partnership reflects LR’s commitment to helping operators navigate complex regulations and accelerate their decarbonisation efforts.
