Global Ro-Ro community unveils standard methodology for measuring GHG emissions

The Global Ro-Ro Community whose six member organizations are Eastern Car Liner Ltd., Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, Wallenius Wilhelmsen ASA, and ClassNK has released new guidelines for calculating greenhouse-gas emission intensity from Ro-Ro vessels such as car carriers.

Developed in collaboration with the international non-profit Smart Freight Centre, the guidelines establish a unified calculation method that will allow shippers to measure Scope 3 emissions accurately and consistently, thereby accelerating decarbonization efforts across the maritime logistics sector.

The resulting model aligns with ISO 14083 and the Global Logistics Emissions Council framework.

First presented at SFC’s “Smart Freight Week” in Amsterdam, the methodology is now published as formal guidelines on the SFC website.

SFC’s next step is to gather vessel-specific performance data and publish industry-wide averages with greater precision, providing the logistics community with a robust foundation for emissions reporting and reduction.
