Global Ports invests in new container handling equipment

Global Ports will equip its Far Eastern terminal Vostochnaya Stevedoring Company (VSC) with two new ship-to-shore cranes.

On 12 September, Global Ports signed a memorandum of intent with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Company (ZPMC) to buy portside container handling equipment.

The cranes, which are expected to arrive by the end of 2024, will enhance the Far Eastern terminal’s equipment fleet and improve berth throughput capacity by 18% to 1.1 million TEU per year.

The new STS cranes will be able to accommodate post-Panamax class vessels thanks to Twin Lift technology, which allows two 20-foot containers to be lifted up and transferred simultaneously in one lift, regardless of reach.

The spreader stabilisation technology will allow container ships to be handled at wind speeds up to 2m/s quicker than the STS cranes currently in use at VSC.

The cranes enable the automation of live-mode container data exchange with the terminal operating system, which speeds up cargo handling and reduces the chance of human mistakes.

Furthermore, VSC will launch two new heavy-duty mobile cranes with a lifting capability of 144 tons in 2023. The terminal will get nine RTG and RMG cranes, as well as more than 20 pieces of additional port and storage equipment, between 2023 and 2024.
