Maersk Line has declared General Average in relation to the fire on board the ship Marie Maersk. This means that all cargo interests must contribute equally to the costs incurred in salvaging the ship and the containers on board.
The 2013-built 19,076 TEU Marie Maersk was sailing from Rotterdam to Malaysia’s Port Klang when its cargo hold caught fire off Liberia on 13 August. The fire burnt for a week before being brought under control.
Customers and cargo owners have been asked to provide securities to expedite the release of the containers on Marie Maersk.
Maersk has confirmed that the ship will proceed to Malaysia’s Tanjung Pelepas port where it will berth to discharge both intact and damaged containers, clean the vessel, and perform minor repairs. Marie Maersk is expected to arrive on 12 September.
