Gebrüder Weiss establishes central IT and logistics hub near Austria’s freight terminal

Gebrüder Weiss, a globally operating full-service logistics provider, is setting up a central location for IT and logistics near Wolfurt’s freight terminal, ensuring the retention of local employment opportunities.

The municipality of Wolfurt in Vorarlberg, Austria, has approved the commencement of construction for Gebrüder Weiss’ IT and logistics centre at the Wolfurt industrial park. This decision was reached during the local council meeting held on 9 April.

“I am delighted that we have all the necessary permits, and we can now press on with construction work,” stated Wolfram Senger-Weiss, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss.

Over 30,000 square meters on Senderstrasse in Wolfurt, construction is underway for a high-bay warehouse and a manual warehouse, accompanied by an office building for the logistics company’s IT department.

In addition, the local council’s zoning plans were greenlit during Wolfurt’s council meeting on 24 January. Mayor Angelika Moosbrugger expressed enthusiasm, highlighting the significance of Gebrüder Weiss’ IT and logistics centre for the development of the “Hohe Brücke” industrial park and its contribution to creating high-quality job opportunities in Wolfurt. “The proximity to the goods station is of course ideal,” emphasized Mayor Angelika Moosbrugger.

Wolfram Senger-Weiss further added, “This state-of-the-art IT and logistics location will be just perfect for our employees and customers: not only will it bring our IT teams closer together, but the location’s proximity to the Wolfurt freight terminal means we will also be able to combine transport modes more efficiently, moving them onto rail tracks and shortening transport times. This will translate into greater security of supply for our customers in terms of materials and goods, which in turn will have a positive effect for other businesses both in Vorarlberg and the wider region.”

To maximize land utilization, the building will be designed to conserve space effectively. A single building complex, reaching a total height of 25 meters, will consist of a 4,500-square-meter logistics warehouse, atop which a three-storey office building is planned, allowing for dual utilization of the available space. Adjacent to this complex, a 34-meter-high high-bay warehouse capable of accommodating 68,000 pallets is under construction.

In line with the company’s sustainability commitment, plans include incorporating a photovoltaic system, a green roof, and charging stations for electric trucks and cars. Moreover, the logistics company has opted to dispense large parking lots, instead providing incentives for employees to utilize local public transport options.

“Our IT teams are currently based in Kennelbach. However, capacities both there and in Lauterach have reached their limit, which is why we want to create a location that offers long-term growth potential. After the move, about 300 people will be employed in IT and about 50 in logistics. We are planning and building for the future, which is why we are already creating space for more jobs now,” explains Stefan Oberhauser, Branch Manager Land & Logistics Vorarlberg at Gebrüder Weiss.
