Fremantle Ports moves a quarter of its boxes by rail in March

Fremantle Ports transported 16,807 TEU via rail in March, which is 24.3% of the overall container volumes handled in the port, exceeding the target of 20% of Australia’s government.

“That percentage not only well exceeds the state government target of 20%, but is significantly higher than the five-ports average of 11.4% for Australia,” commented Fremantle Ports’ CEO, Michael Parker.

With this performance the sixth-busiest port of Oceania has set a new record for containers handled via rail, surpassing the previous record set in January 2022, when rail containers (15,015 TEU) translated to 23.9% of all boxes moved.

In addition, this percentage of containers on rail represents an estimated 10,985 trucks off the road network, which means a reduction in noise and traffic volume, according to Fremantle Ports. Parker said that last year, there were 100,000 fewer trucks on the road coming in and out of Fremantle, as a direct result of the strong use of rail.

With the introduction of further initiatives, Fremantle Ports is on-track to meet Australia’s government’s ambitious target of 30% of container freight on rail.
