First box handled in Savannah by Gateway Terminals

Gateway Terminals, a new joint venture company between Ports America, Ceres Marine Terminals, and SSA Atlantic, has handled the first container at the Port of Savannah on 3 January.

In part, Gateway Terminals will manage the operation of loading and unloading vessels, including hiring longshoremen crews on behalf of the shipping lines, planning vessel stowage and overseeing cargo handling safety, according to the Port of Savannah.

“Benefits for port customers include integrated operations across all berths, providing the ability to turn more ships and move more cargo,” said GPA executive director, Griff Lynch.

In addition, the chief operating officer at GPA, Ed McCarthy commented that unified stevedoring services will help maximise flexibility and bring together a world-class operating team at the US single largest container terminal.

The companies Ports America, Ceres Marine Terminals, and SSA Atlantic have consolidated container terminals, truck gates and stevedoring services under Gateway Terminals in November 2021 to simplify their activities.

“Bringing together three organisations under one umbrella provides a compelling opportunity for growth, especially in light of the tremendous increase in demand for services from Georgia Ports,” said Kevin Price, president of Gateway Terminals.
