Finland’s first dry port in Kouvola is ready

The Kouvola rail and road terminal (RRT) in Finland is now finished. The intermodal terminal’s specialty is the kilometre-long loading tracks, which bring efficiency to the handling of freight trains.

The project fell nearly US$6.5 million under the original cost estimate. The terminal is located in the Kouvola Tehola logistics area at the junction of the main road and railway network.

The implementation totalled at approximately US$37 million, of which the city of Kouvola accounted for approximately US$25.5 million, the European Union funding around US$7.3 million, and the Finnish State around US$3.7 million.

“Such a great result was achieved through cooperation, in which the project’s construction consultant played a significant role. And the know-how of the city’s technical professionals cannot be underestimated, especially in the field of sustainable construction,” says Tero Valtonen, project manager of the RRT project.

The City of Kouvola and its operations are managed and developed further by Railgate Finland Ltd. The terminal was commissioned in January.

Kouvola RRT is also part of the development of the European TEN-T core transport network and the only rail and road terminal in Finland belonging to the network.

In addition, Kouvola RRT responds to the EU’s climate policies that aim to shift long-distance freight transport from roads to other forms of transport.
