Fincantieri has launched the “Viking Libra”, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, at its shipyard in Ancona. The vessel, built for Viking, is scheduled for delivery at the end of 2026.

The launch ceremony was attended by Gilberto Tobaldi, Director of the Ancona shipyard, along with representatives from Viking.

A Milestone in Sustainable Cruising

With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons and a length of 239 meters, “Viking Libra” will accommodate up to 998 passengers across 499 staterooms.

The vessel will be powered by a hydrogen-based propulsion system, using liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. This advanced setup will enable zero-emission operations, allowing the ship to navigate even in environmentally sensitive areas.

Strong Partnership Between Fincantieri and Viking

The project highlights the long-standing collaboration between Fincantieri and Viking, which began in 2012. Including ships already ordered, signed contracts, and recent options—subject to financing conditions—the partnership now totals 26 vessels.

Strategic Role of Ancona Shipyard

The Ancona shipyard plays a key role in Fincantieri’s industrial network. Spanning approximately 360,000 square meters, the facility has:

  • Production capacity of 60,000 gross tons

  • Lifting systems of up to 500 tons

  • Hull construction capability of around 1,200 tons

Since 2009, the yard has delivered more than 20 ships, supported by a workforce of about 3,700 employees.

Focus on Innovation and Growth

Further investments are planned to expand production capacity at the site. The shipyard is also part of Fincantieri’s Operations Excellence program, which integrates advanced technologies, robotics, and artificial intelligence to improve efficiency and working conditions.

The launch of “Viking Libra” marks a major step forward in maritime decarbonisation, positioning Fincantieri and Viking at the forefront of sustainable cruise innovation.
