Fincantieri and Generative Bionics have launched an industrial partnership to develop a humanoid welding robot for shipyards. The project aims to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and production quality in European shipbuilding.

The robot will support specific welding tasks in naval manufacturing. It will use AI, advanced manipulation, vision systems, and optimized locomotion to monitor welding seams and operate safely alongside workers. Initial on-site tests are planned by the end of 2026, with operational functionality expected within two years. Development and testing will take place at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyard.

The four-year collaboration aligns with Fincantieri’s innovation and robotics strategy, addressing production complexity and skilled labor shortages. The project also supports European technological sovereignty and complements other robotics initiatives within the Fincantieri Group.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Fincantieri, said the partnership strengthens operational excellence and supports workers in demanding tasks while maintaining quality and safety. Daniele Pucci, CEO of Generative Bionics, highlighted the project as a key step toward industrial deployment of humanoid robots designed to work alongside humans.
