Engine Introduction
Everllence has introduced its new dual-fuel ME-LGIA ammonia engine at a two-day event in Copenhagen attended by more than 300 maritime industry representatives.
The ME-LGIA engine uses the Diesel principle and builds on Everllence’s proven Liquid Gas Injection technology used in its methanol (ME-LGIM) and LPG (ME-LGIP) engines.
Because of ammonia’s specific properties, the ME-LGIA includes added safety measures such as containment systems, sensors, enhanced ventilation, and double-walled piping.
Industry Significance
CEO Dr. Uwe Lauber said the new engine marks a critical step in the green transition. He stated that adopting new fuels is essential for achieving zero-carbon shipping and that ammonia will play a key role.
The first ME-LGIA is scheduled for delivery in Q1 2026, with bedding-in expected in Q4 2025.

The ME-LGIA will be deployed in several early projects, including:

Two Very Large Ammonia Carriers for Eastern Pacific Shipping

Four engines for Höegh Autoliners’ Pure Car and Truck Carriers

One engine for a Japanese bulk carrier currently being tested at the MITSUI E&S facility
Engineering and Testing
Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business, described the engine as a major technological milestone. The project required more than 150,000 hours of development and over 800 tests since July 2023 in both Copenhagen and Japan.
He emphasized that safety guided every stage and that close collaboration with authorities and classification societies helped ensure compliance.
Digital Connectivity
The ME-LGIA engine will be digitally connected, enabling secure data transfer to Everllence’s shore-based monitoring systems.
This supports real-time performance optimization, remote assistance, and improved operational efficiency, an important factor as new fuels enter the market.
Availability
The first commercial release will include G50, S50, S60, G60, G70, and G80 bore sizes. Retrofit options will be added later.
