European Union approves €22M for Helsinki–Lübeck port upgrades

The European Commission (EC) has awarded €22 million in co-funding to the Hansalink 3 project, aimed at enhancing the maritime corridor between the Port of Helsinki and the German port of Lübeck-Travemünde. The Port of Helsinki will receive approximately €12 million of the total funding.

With a total budget of €45 million, the project is set to deliver significant upgrades to port infrastructure, enhance digitalization, and streamline both passenger and cargo flows. Key developments include the installation of onshore power supply systems compatible with the latest Finnlines vessels and the implementation of automated mooring systems at both ports. These enhancements are designed to boost operational efficiency while aligning with European sustainability goals.

Hansalink 3 marks the continuation of EU-backed cooperation between Helsinki and Lübeck-Travemünde, which began in 2014. The initiative is co-financed under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the EU’s primary funding instrument for strategic transport projects.

The significant EU support will enable measures in ports to improve the competitiveness of the Helsinki–Travemünde corridor and develop maritime transport in line with sustainable development goals. I am glad that we have been able to collaborate closely with the Lübeck Port Authority to build a project that supports the development of the unit cargo and passenger vessel fleet on this route and ultimately serves the needs of North European companies and consumers”, said Vesa Marttinen, Vice President of Cargo at the Port of Helsinki.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
