Eneco, a natural gas supplier, has applied for the permit to build the "Eneco Electrolyzer", an 800-MW green hydrogen plant that will support Rotterdam's goal of producing 2.5 GW of green hydrogen by 2030.
The Eneco Electrolyser will use green energy from solar and wind farms to produce the hydrogen. With this hydrogen, which therefore uses no fossil fuel, the industry can make processes and products more sustainable.
The largest European hydrogen plant, Holland Hydrogen 1, with a capacity of 200 MW, is now under construction at the Maasvlakte conversion park.
At that location, three such projects are planned. The second conversion park on the Maasvlakte is designated for the winner of the IJmuiden Ver wind farm tender, which contains space for a 1,000 MW hydrogen park. Uniper, an energy-generating plant, has proposed a 500 MW hydrogen facility at the location.
The Eneco Electrolyser will be built close to the Enecogen power plant in Europoort, which will share connections with the hydrogen plant. The facility will have an 800 MW capacity. Depending on the quantity of green energy available and the demand for green hydrogen from the industrial sector, this will allow for an annual generation of 80 kilotons of hydrogen. Eneco anticipates being able to start the construction of the Eneco Electrolyser in 2026. The hydrogen plant is currently scheduled to start operating in 2029.
