New electric terminal tractors enter operations at APM Terminals Pier 400

APM Terminals Pier 400 has introduced the largest fleet of electric terminal tractors (ETTs) at the Port of Los Angeles.

Delivered by Orange EV in collaboration with Pacific Crane Maintenance Company (PCMC), the rollout represents a critical milestone in Pier 400’s commitment to sustainable innovation and inclusive workforce development.

The initial deployment features 10 fully commissioned ETTs, with an additional 10 scheduled to arrive by the end of July.

This initiative will replace nearly 30% of the terminal’s diesel-powered tractor fleet and supports APM Terminals’ broader ambition to achieve net-zero emissions at Pier 400 by 2030.

The strategy includes reducing energy consumption, phasing out legacy equipment, and transitioning to clean, scalable technologies.

Jon Poelma, Managing Director of APM Terminals Pier 400, noted that the collaboration with PCMC is essential, and this deployment highlights their shared progress.

As part of this transformation, Pier 400 hosted a three-day paid training program in mid-May for 21 ILWU Local 13 union mechanics employed by PCMC.

Conducted by Orange EV technicians, the training covered safety protocols, diagnostics, and regular maintenance procedures for the new electric tractors, combining classroom sessions with hands-on learning. This training initiative is part of a wider effort by APM Terminals to prepare its workforce for the technological evolution of terminal operations.
