Updated: Eimskip reports Lagarfoss engine malfunction

Icelandic operator Eimskip reported that its 875TEU vessel the Lagarfoss has suffered an engine failure some 230 nautical miles southwest of Iceland, while the vessel was en route to Halifax, Canada.

Crew attempted to repair the engine without success, and the Icelandic Coast Guard was then asked to tow the vessel get back to Reykjavík.

“Eimskip will contact the customers that have cargo on board to make further arrangements. The weather on location is good and both vessel and the crew is safe and well,” said an Eimskip statement.

The estimated date of arrival in Reykjavík is 31 December, weather permitting. Sea conditions are reportedly calm at this time.

An Eimskip spokeswoman told Container News there was a catastrophic failure of the crankshaft in the main engine. “The vessel is loaded with about 6,600 tonnes of cargo which the company will transfer to other vessels in its service for final delivery. We will not declare general average,” she added.
