Hutchison Ports ECT Rotterdam (ECT) kicked off its ambitious plan to electrify its operations at the Euromax terminal.
ECT celebrated the signing of the “E-HERO” Grant Agreement under the European Union’s ”Connecting Europe Facility” (CEF) program. The initiative marks the start of the terminal’s transition to a fully electric fleet of automated guided vehicles (AGVs), supporting ECT’s goal of becoming completely emission-free by 2035.
ECT CEO Leo Ruijs highlighted the importance of funding mechanisms like CEF in helping ports and terminals advance toward sustainability goals. “Without this kind of support, transitioning to emission-free operations would be significantly harder,” Ruijs said.
Olivier Silla of the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) stressed the broader impact of programs like E-HERO. “This project delivers real-world progress in the green transition of European ports,” said Silla, who heads the Sustainable Networks and Investments department.
The CEF support will contribute to the purchase of electric AGVs and terminal trucks (e-TTs), which transport containers between the quay and the container yard, as well as the necessary electrical infrastructure, including fast chargers.
