Dyros diverted to Mexico for safety inspection

The 4,578 TEU boxship Dyros, which lost around 90 containers on 21 March due to heavy weather, has now been diverted to the port of Lazaro Cardenas in Mexico where it is expected to arrive on 3 April.

The vessel, which is owned by Costamare and is chartered and operated by Maersk, will undergo a safety inspection by authorities prior to berthing.

Liberia-flagged Dyros was en route from the port of Yantian in China to the port of Seattle in the United States, when the incident occurred around 1,200 nm from Japan.

Post assessment and upon approval, berthing plans will be finalised to come alongside, according to the latest update from Maersk, which said that “once alongside damage assessment will be conducted that will steer the cargo recovery operation, that normally commences slowly to ensure safety of vessel, underlying cargo and crew.”

The Danish carrier added, “We plan to retain the unimpacted containers onboard for further on carriage to destination. However, this will depend on the extent of damage to the vessel and the time it will entail to complete the repairs before she can resume the voyage.”
