DP World, the Deendayal Port Authority, and Nevomo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on a groundbreaking pilot project using Nevomo’s proprietary MagRail technology.
This initiative will explore the use of self-propelled, rail-based cargo movement within existing port infrastructure in India.
The Deendayal Port Authority, a major multi-cargo port under the Government of India, will host the pilot project at its Kandla terminal to assess the viability of this next-generation freight system.
The initiative supports India’s National Logistics Policy and the PM Gati Shakti agenda, both of which aim to modernize and integrate the country’s logistics infrastructure.
Under the agreement, a 750-metre pilot project will be launched at Deendayal Port.
This first-of-its-kind deployment in India will showcase autonomous freight movement using electric-powered wagons driven by linear motor technology on existing rail tracks.
The MagRail system aims to increase cargo-handling capacity, speed, and efficiency while lowering operational costs and carbon emissions thereby creating a greener and more interoperable logistics framework.
Commenting on the agreement, Shri Sushil Kumar Singh said DP World’s partnership is vital to this initiative, which aligns with the commitment to strengthen India’s logistics capabilities and ensure seamless trade facilitation.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman & CEO of DP World, stated that piloting MagRail will optimize infrastructure use and reduce transit times and support Deendayal Port in meeting India’s evolving connectivity and trade goals.
Nevomo CEO Przemek (Ben) Paczek also remarked that partnering with DP World and DPA positions us to drive meaningful change in India’s logistics landscape.
This strategic alliance will demonstrate how cutting-edge MagRail technology can automate short-distance cargo transfers, reduce reliance on diesel vehicles, and improve yard productivity.
