DP World Chile, first operator in South America certified as using 100% renewable energy

DP World Chile has secured the first renewable electric energy certification for a port operator in South America, reaching a milestone both for the facility and the company’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.

Εndorsed by Ernst and Young Global Limited, the certification was awarded by the Chilean energy firm Colbun, which said that DP World Chile uses 100% renewable electrical energy across its ports.

The DP World team who had to showcase how 100% of the port’s electricity comes from the hydroelectric plants across the two terminals, worked with the energy group ENEL for over a year to obtain this certification.

According to DP World, in San Antonio port, 54% of its total energy is hydroelectric and thereby renewable, and 30% of the total energy used at Lirquen Port is also hydroelectric.

“This certification implies that we are not only reducing the carbon footprint in our operation but that we are reducing the footprint on all import and export cargoes that use our terminals,” said the CEO of DP World Chile, Curtis Doiron, who went on to emphasize, “The certificate allows us to firmly move towards one of DP World’s worldwide objectives, seeking to be carbon neutral by 2050.”
