Dockworker seriously injured after 12-metre fall at Piraeus port

A dockworker fell from a height of 12 metres in the Greek port of Piraeus, while he was working on a container ship at Pier III of the COSCO-owned port on 28 April.

The 38-year-old port employee was seriously injured and has been transferred to the hospital. According to local media, the dockworker seems to suffer fractures all over his body.

Greek media report that the ship’s guardrails broke and the worker, who worked on the vessel, fell into the gap from a height of 12 metres.

The Union of Piraeus Port Dock Containers Workers (ENEDEP) said there is no preventive control for the safety measures on the ships, before the dock workers go to work on them and pointed out that this is one of the constant demands of the union.

“Employers and the government have the responsibility for whatever is happening,” stated the union, which noted that last year another dockworker suffered a similar accident.

After the latest accident, which occurred on the morning of 28 April, the workers on piers II and III, owned by COSCO, decided a work stoppage until today (28 April) at midnight. Additionally, the dockworkers on piers II and III at the Piraeus port will go on strike on 1 and 2 May.

It is important to mention that in October 2021, another port worker lost his life at Pier II of the Piraeus Container Terminal after he was fatally hit by a container crane.
