DNV has introduced RuleAgent, an artificial intelligence tool designed to help maritime professionals navigate the organisation’s rules and standards more efficiently.

The tool allows users to pose questions in natural language and receive targeted results drawn directly from DNV’s official regulatory database, addressing the practical challenge of searching across more than 30,000 pages of rules spanning multiple documents, chapters and editions.

RuleAgent operates by searching DNV’s rules and standards database in real time, identifying relevant rule paragraphs, generating concise summaries and providing direct links to official sources.

This approach preserves full traceability to authoritative content while enabling users to apply their own professional judgement to the results.

Where vessel-specific information is available, the tool uses the ship type and class notations associated with that vessel to narrow results and deliver more targeted regulatory guidance.

The tool currently covers Rules for Ships, Rules for Offshore Units and a range of reference documents including Class Guidelines, Class Programs, Statutory Interpretations, Standards, Offshore Standards and Recommended Practices, with further expansion planned.

It has been piloted with selected customers to validate performance and refine the user experience prior to broader release.

Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, Interim CEO Maritime at DNV, described RuleAgent as part of the organisation’s broader commitment to applying digitalisation responsibly to strengthen how customers access technical knowledge and navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment.

Martin Borge Heir, Project Manager for RuleAgent at DNV, highlighted the tool’s accessibility for both experienced professionals and newer users, framing it as a trusted reference for rule-related queries with faster navigation and clear source attribution.
