Danaos waits instructions for ZIM Kingston’s next moves

DANAOS Shipping, the owner of ZIM Kingston, which suffered a fire incident and lost 109 containers off the Canadian Coast on 22 October, reports that the plans they have submitted to the authorities regarding the unloading of cargo have been approved.

The Greek shipping company is now waiting for the green light and instructions as to which port they will be moving to.

Cleanup crews have been working since the beginning of the incident but weather has impacted those operations at times with high wind and swells, according to Danaos, which noted that “safety is our first priority and at times cleanup operation have been halted but progress is being made.”

There are no further signs of the missing containers and they are presumed to have sunk.  Most of them included a multitude of common household items.

However, two of the boxes contained potassium amyl xanthate and thiourea dioxide, used in mining. Those products are water-soluble, biodegradable and would breakdown in water.

The company said is working with local authorities to determine the next steps for possibly locating the missing containers.
