Damen Shipyards Group unveiled the latest addition to its cargo vessel portfolio at Europort 2025 in Rotterdam. The Combi Freighter (CF) 5000 ICE is the first in a new series of ice-class cargo vessels. Damen’s approach is scalable, allowing future vessels to build on this platform.
Efficient in Open Water, Strong in Ice
Remko Bouma, Commercial Director of Damen Cargo Vessels, explained the design strategy. “We wanted to create a vessel capable of economic ice navigation while retaining high efficiency and cargo capacity in open water. We worked closely with operators to deliver a practical, dependable ship suited for today and tomorrow.”
Optimized Design
The CF 5000 ICE builds on Damen’s experience with CF 3850 and conventional CF 5000 vessels. Damen slightly increased the hull length and draught to boost deadweight tonnage. These adjustments deliver a significant increase in cargo capacity. Damen plans to implement these improvements in the next generation of conventional CF 5000 vessels.
Ice-Class Capabilities
The vessel meets Swedish/Finnish Ice Class rules and complies with Finnish flag regulations. It offers high-quality accommodations, including a sauna and gym. The comprehensive winterization package allows operations in temperatures as low as -30°C.
Future-Proof, Green Design
The CF 5000 ICE uses a hybrid PTO/PTI system for ice-class power. This allows the vessel to operate efficiently on a small propulsion system during normal operations. Additional propulsion is available only when needed.
The design supports battery installations and shore connectivity. Batteries enable peak shaving and short periods of full electric propulsion, such as in port or sensitive areas. The vessel can also sail on low-emission biodiesel and is prepared for wind-assisted propulsion via a Ventofoil foundation.
The CF 5000 ICE integrates Damen’s IoT platform, Triton. Triton gathers data from sensors, giving crew and fleet managers system and asset health updates. It also helps crews maintain equipment efficiently.
Lifelong Support
Damen will start constructing the first CF 5000 ICE soon. Completion is expected by mid-2027, in time for winter. Like all CF vessels, it will be built in Asia for cost-efficient production. Damen will continue to support clients through its Cargo Vessels aftersales team in the Netherlands, ensuring warranty care and fast assistance if issues arise.
