Emissions from container vessels transiting to and from Europe will incur more than $400 million in FuelEU penalties according to a study Finnish shipmanager Ahti Climate.

Results from the study showed that total emissions into and out of the EU, measured at 50% of the total increased to 146 million tonnes for all vessel operators and including journeys that began and ended in the US, Africa and Asia, with the expectation that the latter will account for the biggest increase due to the Red Sea diversions.

Speaking to Container News study author, Ahti business analyst Thao Nguyen, said that the company had recognised that the shipping markets were volatile last year and looked at EU MRV data and discovered a “spike” in emissions when compared to 2024 data.
