Construction worker dies at Tuas mega-port site in Singapore

A worker involved with the building of Singapore’s new mega-port has died after being found motionless at the construction site.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said today (31 July) that the man was discovered around 9 am local time on 29 July.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered by the worksite safety coordinator and the Singapore Civil Defence Force ambulanced the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man was confirmed to be hired by the joint venture between Japanese construction group Penta-Ocean Construction, South Korean construction group Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Dutch dredging group Royal Boskalis Westminster, which won the contract to build the port.

The cause of the man’s death is being investigated.

The port, located in Tuas, an industrial estate in the western part of Singapore, will be built in four phases; the second phase is ongoing. By the 2040s, all of Singapore’s container handling operations will be centralised in the Tuas port.
