Constanța Port strengthens role as key gateway for Asian trade

Port of Constanta

Constanța Port, Romania’s largest sea terminal and a major hub in the Black Sea, handled over 96% of the country’s maritime cargo in 2024. Its importance has grown amid infrastructure investments exceeding €250 million, including expanded quay areas, RO-RO and project cargo terminals, and upgraded rail and road access.

The port’s significance has also increased since Ukraine’s Odesa port shutdown, leaving Constanța as the only Black Sea port with regular maritime connections to China, the EU’s top import partner.

Trade flows through Constanța are expected to gain further momentum as China looks to Europe for exports and manufacturing, with Central and Eastern Europe emerging as a prime region for nearshoring. Countries such as Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania are attracting investment due to their labor force, growing consumption, and improving logistics networks.

The port serves two key roles. Domestically, it connects Romania’s fast-growing industrial economy, driven by companies like Dacia, Ford, Continental, and Bosch, with global markets. In 2024, the automotive sector alone accounted for 14% of Romanian exports. Regionally, Constanța functions as a logistics hub for Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans, with efficient links to countries including Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, and the Czech Republic. Its location on the Danube also supports inland waterway transport for oversized industrial cargo.

Recognizing this potential, SUUS Logistics has launched a weekly less-than-container-load (LCL) service from Shanghai to Constanța. The service consolidates cargo in China, ships it to Romania, and manages deconsolidation and nationwide distribution. SUUS also provides comprehensive customs clearance, including tariff consulting, VAT settlement, and documentation support, ensuring smooth operations in today’s complex trade environment.
