CMA CGM has reached a major milestone in its partnership with India following a visit from Chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saadé. During the visit, the company signed a final shipbuilding contract with Cochin Shipyard Limited. This agreement covers the construction of six LNG-powered 1,700 TEU container ships directly in India.
The signing took place in the presence of Shri Shantanu Thakur, Minister of State at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. This project highlights the carrier’s investment in Indian manufacturing and sustainable shipping technology.
In addition to fleet expansion, the Group is significantly increasing its local workforce. Currently, 1,000 Indian seafarers serve with CMA SHIPS. The company aims to increase this number to 1,500 by the end of 2026. This initiative supports the professional development of Indian maritime talent on a global scale.

Furthermore, CMA CGM has launched a dedicated Research and Development (R&D) hub in India. This center will focus on creating next-generation AI solutions. These technologies will serve maritime and logistics operations worldwide, positioning India as a technical hub for the company’s global network.
These developments represent a long-term commitment to India’s maritime and logistics ecosystem. By combining vessel construction, workforce growth, and digital innovation, CMA CGM continues to deepen its strategic presence in the region.
