ClassNK rolls out Fleet Cost Simulation tool

ClassNK has introduced a new digital service aimed at helping shipping companies estimate and plan for the financial impact of upcoming environmental regulations. The tool, called “ClassNK Fleet Cost Simulation,” is part of the classification society’s broader Transition Support Services and is designed to support the industry’s shift to low- and zero-carbon fuels.

As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, with IMO’s mid-term decarbonization measures, the EU Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS), and FuelEU Maritime on the horizon, shipowners face growing pressure to factor in compliance costs.

ClassNK’s latest offering is intended to ease that burden by providing a practical, data-driven approach to cost forecasting.

At the heart of the service is the ClassNK Fleet Cost Calculator, an Excel-based tool that allows users to model various cost scenarios across their fleets. Shipowners can tweak assumptions such as shipbuilding costs, fuel prices, vessel replacement timing, emission factors, and energy efficiency improvements. The tool will also be updated as regulations evolve.

To complement the calculator, clients also receive a Cost Estimation Report in PowerPoint format. This report lays out cost projections through 2050 in an accessible, visual format.

ClassNK also offers an optional, advanced version of the report that digs deeper into optimization strategies, analyzing the best timing and approach for fuel conversions to reduce long-term costs.
