ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for Oshima Shipbuilding’s concept design of a bulk carrier capable of using multiple alternative fuels, ammonia, methanol, and LNG, and ready for onboard CO₂ capture and storage (OCCS).

The AiP confirms the vessel’s feasibility from both regulatory and safety perspectives. The certification follows ClassNK’s guidelines for Alternative Fuel Ready vessels (Annex 1, Edition 3.0.1) and OCCS Ready notations (Edition 2.0), which set standards for ships designed to accommodate alternative fuels or carbon capture systems in the future.

ClassNK reviewed Oshima’s concept design against these requirements and confirmed compliance before granting the AiP. The society said it will continue supporting decarbonization initiatives through safety assessments and related measures.
