ClassNK has issued Approval of Manufacturing Procedure and Type Approval certificates for a new semi-parallel wire cable developed by KOBELCO Wire Company.

The approval covers a high-corrosion-resistant type of semi-parallel wire cable (SPWC). It marks the first time ClassNK has approved this type of product.

Designed for durability and offshore use

The SPWC consists of polyethylene-coated strands made from 7 mm galvanized steel wires. The design provides high fatigue strength and strong corrosion resistance.

The cable is expected to support mooring systems for floating offshore wind turbines. It offers an alternative to traditional materials such as steel chains and synthetic fiber ropes. It also allows flexible mooring configurations.

Verified against ClassNK standards

ClassNK reviewed the product under its “Guidelines for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines.” The society confirmed that the cable meets all required standards before issuing the certificates.

Supporting offshore wind innovation

ClassNK said it will continue to support the development and adoption of new offshore wind technologies. It will do so through safety evaluations and related certification activities.
