CK Line-operated boxship grounds after hitting Busan breakwater

A boxship operated by CK Line remains anchored in Busan after running aground on 28 July.

According to the Korea Coast Guard, the 1,900 TEU vessel Sky Challenge had knocked into a breakwater at 2.05 am local time, while attempting to berth. The impact caused Sky Challenge to be grounded.

S&P Global’s vessel-tracking data shows that Sky Challenge had just been bunkered in the South Korean port.

Although the ship’s name was not disclosed, the Korea Coast Guard said the vessel is Panama-flagged and has a gross tonnage of 20,738. S&P Global’s data shows that the Sky Challenge matches the vessel description.

EconDB’s data shows that Sky Challenge is one of three ships plying the NKT service connecting Busan, Gwangyang, Incheon, Ho Chi Minh City, Laem Chabang, Bangkok, Mawan and Hong Kong.

Korea Coast Guard said its personnel rescued all 18 crewmen on Sky Challenge, adding that no one was hurt and no fuel oil had leaked into the sea.

Sky Challenge was lifted off the breakwater by coast guard personnel at 7.40 am the same day.

The ship was supposed to have sailed on to Hong Kong after loading and discharging containers in Busan.

The coast guard said it is investigating the cause of the accident.
