Chittagong port reports flying start in 2022 with 9% growth in January

Bangladesh’s prime seaport has made a strong start in the year, attaining 9.20% growth in container handling in January compared to the same month in the previous year, handling 265,201 TEU.

In terms of value, January goods worth US$4.85 billion were exported from Bangladesh, up by 41.13% compared to January last year’s export earnings.

Exporters say that after the pandemic situation eased last year, Bangladeshi apparel manufacturers received huge export orders, and now those are being shipped which has a clear reflection in port’s handling data.

“Bangladeshi apparel sector received huge order late last month as many orders shifted from other manufacturing hubs,” noted Abul Kalam Azad, a Narayanganj-based garment owner.

“The manufacturers had to appoint extra workers and open additional lines to cope up with the demand,” he said adding the trend of work orders is still very promising.
