Chile’s terminal selects Kalmar process automation solutions

An order was given to Kalmar, a Finnish company that provides cargo handling solutions and services to ports, terminals, distribution centers and heavy industry and is part of Cargotec, for its Kalmar SmartPort process automation solutions.

The interested party is Terminal Graneles del Norte S.A. (TGN) and intends to implement these solutions at the Greenfield terminal, which is currently under construction in the Antofagasta region of Mejillones, Chile.

Eduardo Simian, project manager of TGN, said, “We chose Kalmar SmartPort solutions because of Kalmar’s ability to offer a solution that will be a key part of the automated container movement through the port.”

The order was booked in Cargotec’s Q3 2021 order intake and the start of operation of the system is estimated to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023.

TGN operates a multipurpose terminal in the Mejillones Bay, Chile, where mining takes place.

To meet growing demand in the region, TGN is building a new container terminal at Antofagasta, featuring an automated rail crane system, boosted by Kalmar SmartPort solutions to improve the efficiency and performance of the station.

“With our help, the customer will be able to speed up their performance by minimising idle times and avoiding delays in their container yard with the best possible safety and security for their operational processes,” noted Ezequiel Bracco, sales manager of Automation Solutions at Kalmar Americas.

Once operational, the terminal will benefit from the following three Kalmar SmartPort solutions designed to improve efficiency, security and productivity:

SmartMap, which enables real-time and historical visualisation of equipment location and container routing in the yard.

SmartTrucks, which automatically monitors the road truck to ensure compliance with the work instruction and to increase crane productivity when the truck arrives at the point of work.

SmartLane, which will use RFID tags placed in a closed container loop to automatically register and monitor containers as they enter or leave the terminal.
