CCS completes green methanol bunkering during cargo ops in Hong Kong

China Classification Society (CCS) has supported a green methanol bunkering operation carried out simultaneously with cargo handling in Hong Kong.

The container vessel COSCO Shipping Gemini, classed by CCS, received 300 tons of green methanol via ship-to-ship (STS) transfer. At the same time, the vessel continued container loading and unloading operations.

Efficient and safe SIMOPs operation

CCS delivered full technical support for the operation. Its services included operational planning, risk assessment, and emergency response preparation. The bunkering was conducted by Chimbusco Pan Nation Petro-Chemical Co., Ltd.

This milestone follows CCS’s earlier support for the CM HONG KONG vessel, which completed Hong Kong’s first green methanol bunkering on March 5.

The latest operation marks a dual breakthrough. It combines STS bunkering with simultaneous cargo handling, improving both efficiency and operational flexibility.

Supporting low-carbon shipping innovation

In recent years, CCS has played a key role in advancing alternative fuel bunkering. The organization supported China’s first LNG bunkering with simultaneous operations (SIMOPs) and Northeast Asia’s first methanol bunkering.

It also contributed to Hong Kong’s first green methanol STS bunkering. In addition, CCS led the development of ISO 22120, a key standard for methanol-fuelled vessels.

Through these efforts, CCS continues to support the maritime industry’s transition toward cleaner and more efficient fuel solutions.
