Cavotec has supported a major milestone in European port electrification with the first-ever shore power connection of a car carrier at a European port.
The operation took place in Bremerhaven, Germany, where the 200-metre pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) Lake Shirasagi successfully connected to shore power while alongside.
Cavotec supplied a PowerReceive shore power system and provided commissioning services. The system enables a safe and reliable connection between the vessel and the port’s electrical grid. It allows onboard diesel generators to shut down during port stays.
The solution reduces COâ‚‚, nitrogen oxide, and particulate emissions. It also improves air quality and lowers noise levels in port areas.
The project marks a first for European car carrier operations. It demonstrates the growing momentum behind shore power for RoRo and automotive shipping.
As shore power infrastructure expands across Europe, Cavotec continues to support shipowners with PCC and PCTC retrofit solutions. These systems allow existing vessels to connect to shore power and meet future environmental requirements.
