Budapest Airport has become one of the fastest-growing air cargo hubs in Central and Eastern Europe. After handling nearly 300,000 tonnes of freight in 2024, the airport is on track to approach 400,000 tonnes in 2025. Its growth reflects not only operational efficiency but also Budapest’s strategic role linking Asia, particularly China, with the region.
The 2022 expansion of BUD Cargo City was a key milestone. The modern complex allows the airport to handle larger freight volumes and compete with major Western European facilities. Regular connections with Asia and strong activity from international courier companies have made Budapest a natural consolidation point for regional goods. Operational standards have also improved, including the IATA CEIV Lithium Batteries certification for the safe handling of regulated shipments—critical for Hungary’s automotive sector.
E-commerce has driven much of the recent expansion, absorbing a large share of cargo capacity alongside other goods. Seasonal peaks in November and December contribute to higher freight rates and increased pressure on logistics.
Rohlig SUUS Logistics highlights Budapest’s growing importance as a regional cargo centre. The company continues to strengthen both export and import operations, offering integrated solutions across air, rail, and sea. Its 7,000 m² Budapest warehouse supports storage, cross-docking, distribution, co-packing, and customs services, enhancing supply chain resilience.
With modern infrastructure, a strategic location, and strong Asian links, Budapest is solidifying its role as a key hub in Central and Eastern Europe and an important node in global supply chains.
