Boxship sinks in Red Sea after major fire

Following a major fire incident, the 1,853 TEU vessel TSS Pearl reportedly sunk approximately 300 kilometres southeast of Port Sudan, a port city in eastern Sudan and the capital of the state of the Red Sea.

According to cargo insurer WK Webster, several containers are reported to be floating at the site of the sinking, but it is currently unconfirmed if any of the vessel superstructures remain visible.

The 2008-built boxship seems to have caught fire on board on 5 October whilst navigating the Red Sea with all the crew members abandoning the container vessel. Reports indicated that the fire was burning in container stacks at the stern of the vessel immediately forward of the accommodation block.

“We have received reports that container ship, TSS Pearl experienced a major fire on board whilst navigating the Red Sea, in a position north west of The Farasan Islands, Saudi Arabia on 5 October 2022,” said WK Webster earlier in October.

A fire expert has been instructed to investigate the cause of the fire and these investigations have already started, according to the UK’s cargo insurer.
