The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) reported a 7.76% increase in cargo traffic in February 2023, with 622,837 TEUs handled compared to 577,993 TEUs in 2021.
The monthly container statistics show a 12.7% rise in exported containers – from 172,208 TEUs in February 2022 to 194,157 TEUs this year – with imported containers increasing 5.9% year-on-year to 193,937 TEUs. Additionally, the transshipment sector gained 5.39% year-on-year, reaching 234,743 TEUs.
However, overall cargo volumes fell 3.13% to 23,089,455 tonnes in the previous month.
According to Mawani, dry bulk freight increased 2.9% to 3,879,366 tonnes, while general cargo increased 77.2% to 639,843 tonnes from 361,086 tonnes the previous year.
Saudi Ports Authority added that volumes in liquid bulk, on the other hand, fell 13.1% from 13,556,831 tonnes in February 2022 to 11,772,089 tonnes last month.
Last but not least, in February, 883 vessels berthed in Saudi ports, translating to a 4.8% increase from 842 vessels during the same month last year.
