Box exports from Asia to US plunge

Container exports from 18 Asian economies to the United States fell around 21% year-on-year in May to 1,582,195 TEUs, continuing a nine-month decline, according to statistics compiled by the Japan Maritime Centre (JMC).

China exported 884,994 TEUs, a decrease of 18%, South Korea exported 99,395 TEUs, a decrease of 14%, Taiwan exported 58,553 TEUs, a decrease of 20%, and Japan exported 49,174 TEUs, a decrease of 21%.

In addition, containers from Southeast Asia fell 28% to 367,453 TEUs, with 187,356 TEUs from Vietnam falling 28%, 73,473 TEUs from Thailand falling 25%, 37,441 TEUs from Indonesia falling 34%, and 30,601 TEUs from Malaysia falling 28%.

South Asia shipped 116,381 TEUs, a 19% decrease, with India shipping 90,701 TEUs, a 17% decrease.

From January through May, 7,091,823 TEUs were traded from Asia to the United States, translating a 25% decline over the same period in 2022.
